Every parent wants their child to feel comfortable and confident in the water.
Learning strokes, building confidence, and progressing through lessons all matter. But many families eventually find themselves asking a bigger question:
If something unexpected happened in the water, would my child know what to do?
Can a child:
- Float and breathe calmly?
- Roll onto their back?
- Get themselves to the wall?
- Exit the pool safely?
Those are the kinds of skills that can make a real difference in an unexpected situation around water.

Swimming lessons help children build confidence in the water, but water safety skills can be just as important. SafeSplash Swim School helps swimmers of all ages develop practical skills that support safer experiences in and around the water.
At SafeSplash Swim School locations across the country, we believe learning to swim should mean learning how to stay safer in the water.
Swimmers of all ages and abilities are welcome, from toddlers taking their first splashes to adults learning to swim for the first time or refining their technique. Every lesson takes place in a safe, supervised environment led by trained instructors and lifeguards dedicated to helping swimmers build confidence while developing the skills that matter most.
Because swimming is about more than progressing through levels.
It’s about helping children feel capable, confident, and prepared in and around water.
That philosophy led to the creation of the S.A.F.E.R. Swimmer Promise, a structured approach focused on helping swimmers ages 4+ build measurable water safety and self-rescue skills.
Today, over 10,000 children nationwide have completed the program and demonstrated the ability to perform these critical skills.

The 10 Skills Every Parent Should Know
The S.A.F.E.R. Swimmer Promise focuses on practical, measurable skills designed around real-world water situations. These skills help swimmers prepare for moments that require more than confidence alone.
These are the 10 skills swimmers work toward mastering:
- Jump In Safely: Controlled water entry.
- Horizontal Body Position: Maneuver to proper body position for movement.
- Freestyle with Breath: Swim 20 feet using an efficient front stroke with breathing.
- Front-to-Back Rollover: Transition from swimming to a back float.
- Back Float: Maintain a float with controlled breathing.
- Turn Around: Rotate in the water to return toward safety.
- Backstroke or Safety Backstroke: Swim 20 feet on the back.
- Sight the Wall: Locate the wall for a safe exit.
- Back-to-Front Rollover: Return to a forward swimming position when ready.
- Exit Safely: Safely exit the pool independently.
Why These Skills Matter
Drowning remains the leading cause of death for children ages 1–4 and a leading cause of accidental injury death for older children as well.
That reality is one reason SafeSplash is proud to partner with the National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA) and serve as the exclusive Platinum Learn-to-Swim provider in the NDPA’s Commitment to Safer Waters program.
The S.A.F.E.R. Swimmer Promise is also supported by the NDPA, reinforcing a shared commitment to helping families build safer communities through education and water safety awareness.

A Different Kind of Swim Promise
Many swim programs focus on progress. The S.A.F.E.R. Swimmer Promise focuses on preparedness.
The program gives families:
- A clear path to progress
- Measurable safety milestones
- A defined timeline
- Real accountability
Swimmers work toward mastering 10 essential self-rescue skills in one year or less.
And if eligible swimmers do not pass the S.A.F.E.R. Swimmer Test within that timeframe, they may receive up to two additional months of lessons at no cost.
