We Tried Sandbox VR’s Age of Dinosaurs and My Kids Loved It

We stepped into a prehistoric world with our kids — and none of us wanted to leave.

Looking for indoor family activities near you that kids will actually talk about for weeks? Sandbox VR's Age of Dinosaurs is not your average virtual reality experience. Instead of just watching dinosaurs on a screen, your whole family steps directly into their world.

This family-friendly VR experience lets kids watch dinosaur eggs hatch, explore prehistoric habitats, observe dinosaur interactions, and even help protect them from danger. It’s thrilling, interactive, and surprisingly educational — making it one of the most unique educational activities for kids we’ve tried.

A Virtual Reality Dinosaur Experience Kids Will Love

Prehistoric dinosaur world inside Sandbox VR Age of Dinosaurs virtual reality adventure

Our family had a chance to try out this NEW all-ages experience at Sandbox VR - Age of Dinosaurs, and it felt like stepping straight into a movie — the prehistoric kind, minus the screaming and running for your life.

My kids’ jaws literally dropped when we came face-to-face with giant dinosaurs — and so did mine. With an engaging storyline that draws you into an exciting mission, our whole family had to work together as we journeyed across dozens of stunning locations spanning two prehistoric ages.

We encountered iconic dinosaurs including Brachiosaurus, Triceratops, Stegosaurus, and the fearsome Tyrannosaurus rex. It truly feels like a dinosaur experience for kids brought to life — without needing an expensive trip to a theme park or museum.

From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed by friendly staff who were incredibly helpful in guiding us as first-timers. The sensors were easy to put on and comfortable enough for kids to wear. Everything is clearly labeled and color-coded, making it surprisingly simple to get suited up.

They walked us through the entire experience and patiently answered my kids’ many questions. 😅

Mom Tip: You can finally break out those tight yoga pants that Gen Z couldn’t convince us to throw away. The sensors go over your clothing, so it helps to avoid wide-leg or flare pants.

Each member of your group is assigned a character in the VR experience. You choose your color, character, and name, which connects to the leaderboard so you can track scores and progress on future visits.

And here’s a bonus that absolutely made my day: After our adventure, Sandbox VR emailed us a professionally edited video that combined footage of us in the room with the VR world we were exploring. It looked like a movie trailer starring my kids — and they’ve watched it approximately one million times.

An Educational Dinosaur Experience for Kids

The level of detail in the storytelling during this time-travel mission is incredible. The whole family was engaged from the start, and it’s clear the experience was developed in partnership with the Natural History Museum of London.

Fascinating facts are woven throughout the adventure, making this not just fun but genuinely educational. Instead of just watching dinosaurs, we fed them, protected them from danger, and walked through prehistoric environments as if we were really there.

There’s even a little friendly competition built into the experience as players capture photos and complete tasks throughout the mission. It’s a clever way to combine learning, teamwork, and fun.

Mom Tip: A couple of moments may feel slightly intense for very young kids — including dinosaurs fighting and a volcano erupting — but the scenes move quickly, and staff can pause the experience if needed.
